Luang Prabang is the jewel of Indochina, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The ancient royal city is surrounded by mountains at the junction of the Mekong and its tributary, the Khan river. In the centre of the city is Mount Phousi with stunning views of the surrounding temples and hills. Luang Prabang is a city where time seems to stand still. Main Attractions in Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang has a lot of historical and cultural landmarks that are indescribably beautiful and unspoiled by the modern world. Phra Thaat Phou Si - was built in 1804 and situated on top of Phou Si mountain in the center of Luang Prabang city. If you want to go up from the base to the top of Phou Si, you have to climb up the 328 zig-zag stairs up the hill slope. From the top you will be able to see the view of the city, from there you can also see the National Museum (used to be the King's Place). It is said that you have not reach Luang Prabang yet unless you visit Phra Thaat Phou Si.
Travel Tips in Luang Prabang
Visa-on-Arrival (good for a 15 day entry permit stamp only) is available at the airport - price is variable based upon your nationality from in between USD35 (French & Americans) and USD42 (Canadians) (payable in USD). You also need a passport picture. If you don't have one, they'll scan your picture from your passport and charge you an additional USD 1. Thai nationals do not need a Visa to enter Laos. It is wise to have the USD ready since the exchange rates for other currencies are not favorable.
